Location sketch

Waiting room…

This is a strange composition. I was getting ready for a safety-oriented class to maintain my union status for the live-action Art Department guild. I looked up and this is what I saw, one guy sitting against the wall and the other guys in the shadows beyond. It occurred to me that I do a lot of sketching while waiting for something. On the one hand I think that’s probably good: making use of the time, celebrating even the most ordinary moments; on the other hand it makes for a lot of sketches of people waiting around. Not sure what that all means. Might make for an interesting series, seeing them all together, if it doesn’t put people to sleep I suppose. Ha.

Some more NY sketches

These are from a fun diner / bar called ‘Cowgirl’.  All but the last image was from where I was sitting.  The last image is of the exterior of the place.  Joan took a picture of me drawing that part:

Not far from our home. Nice shady spot for a bite to eat and a sketch.

Daughter reading

I’ve rediscovered a 1.4mm mechanical pencil with some old art supplies and giving it a whirl. Also, heh, her actual hair color is somewhere between the two; I was just trying out different colors for fun…

Cooking up a storm…

Joan Cooking

A couple of notes: 1. She was moving so fast it was hard to capture in a sketch, and 2. Her skirt isn’t quite that short — I don’t know what happened, maybe the old fear of the edge of the paper syndrome…

Car wash sketch

My old car receiving better treatment than it probably deserves.

Camping – 2010! Concert

We went to the Henry Miller Library to see Black Francis in concert there. It’s a great venue to see music. A couple years back we had seen John Doe and Peter Case there. Very small, intimate venue – folding chairs on the grass, probably a couple hundred people max.  I was not familiar with Black Francis, but was informed by my wife and cousin Jerry that he was in the Pixies. It was a great show, and a nice experience only a couple miles from the campsite.

Camping – 2010! Uncle Jerry

A lot of people came to visit us and stay with us at the campsite. It was great to see Uncle Jerry again. He’s folding up his tent in the lower left-hand corner.

Camping – 2010! Daughters reading

We aren’t very active campers, usually a good book, a sketch book, guitar playing, some crafts to work on, good food, lots of sleep and rafting down the river are our activities. We aren’t the hiking, rappelling, bungie-jumping sort.
