Camping – 2010! Joan cooking

Joan, as usual, cooked some fabulous meals at the campsite. Those little bottles at her feet are the used propane bottles used on the camping stove. Every year that little Coleman two-burner stove gets a serious workout.

Camping – 2010! The campsite

Every year we go to Big Sur, to the same campsite, for a week or so. We just got back and I managed to finish off my latest sketch book! So there are a few images to share. Here’s the campsite. More to come!

Jury Duty

Luckily I wasn’t selected for a jury this time. It was an interesting opportunity to sketch.

Lily practicing for a performance

I threw some Photoshop color on this just for fun.

Another trip to the doctor…

Jack injured his arm while at the beach with another family.  It seemed like nothing at first, then I decided to take him in when the swelling wouldn’t go down.  It turned out that he did have a minor fracture.  But between seeing the doctor in Urgent Care and waiting for the x-ray results, there was a LOT of waiting — which means a lot of sketching!

At some point he even took a nap.

He’s fine now.  Kids heal fast.

Impressions of North Fork

From a great weekend at our good friend’s home away from home.  Very relaxing.

Daughters waiting at the doctor’s office

They were at the doctors to get some blood drawn.  The contrast between their personalities: The older one is very calm and trying to console the younger one, who is nervous and a little bit scared.  They both brought friends – a teddy bear (“Samantha”) and a plush-toy monkey (“Lucy”).

The Rappin’ Mathematician

I’m not sure why this is the third post recently of someone standing in front of an audience with a microphone. Coincidence, I suppose.

Anyway, this was at a PTA meeting I attended with my daughter this evening. The guest speaker was Alex Kajitani, aka the “Rappin’ Mathematician”. He was very inspiring, talking about reaching middle school kids using rap to teach algebra. Here’s a YouTube video from a CBS newscast that explains it pretty well. He was showing us his student – produced music videos about parallel lines and negative and positive numbers. I got the room pretty well, and his physical attitude, but I was not so good with his likeness. So, when he sat down after the presentation, I got to remedy that:

These were both line drawings done in my sketch book at the event, then brought home, scanned and value added in Photoshop.

Sketches from the public education meeting

These were some quick line drawings that I did during the meeting last night and then added value in Photoshop.

It was an important meeting. Letting us know about layoffs of teachers and options they were considering. Pretty depressing, actually.
