Happy 2006

First thing this morning I was treated to a complete reading of Frog and Toad All Year.

The Narrator’s favorite plush toy companions sat quietly and listened to the story with me. Here’s to a wonderful new year!

Rock sculptures in the Big Sur River

As we ate dinner in the waning evening light on the banks of the Big Sur River, the kids patiently stacked water rocks. They made sixty – sixty – of these little sculptures while we dined.

Here they are looking for more rocks.

Roasting marshmallows

I’ll soon post all the sketches from the camping outing, I’ve just been enjoying finally having enough stuff to post daily.

Camping: Kids fishing

They got mostly craw-dads with slices of hot dogs as bait, but Jack did get a small rainbow trout and a couple of mud-suckers. All were dutifully thrown back of course — after being given proper names like “Dragon” and “Son of Dragon” and “Rocky”, etc.

I like the way the kids sit with their knees up to their chins. I wish I were still that flexible!

Return to pollywog creek

We went back to put some pollywogs back with their brothers and sisters, and collect some more. We forgot the net, so Jack caught about 10 or so more with his hands. As usual he keeps moving, so sketching him is quite the challenge. Kids are all about motion, that’s for sure.

Pollywog catching

Over the weekend we all hiked up the hill behind our neighborhood into the woods. There were several small waterfalls and lots of little streams. The kids caught pollywogs to take to school and watch as they turn into frogs to be set back loose in the woods.

Easter weekend sketching

It was a relaxing weekend with three days off. After lunch on Friday we went to the local park. She’s drawing me in her sketchbook while I draw her. I’ll see if she’ll let me borrow her sketch to upload here.

More obvious relaxing.
