Comicon ’06

As usual we took the train.

There were five of us: Jack (of course), his friend Monty, my neighbor across the street Carlo, my good friend from college John, and me. Played a lot of “hangman” on the way. I did some sketching, but not as much as I should have, probably.

On the way back the train broke down and left us on the platform at Laguna Nigel for about three hours. We got home at 3:00 am! Other than that it was a lot of fun.

From earlier this week…

Hah! I made an informational error in this drawing that’s fairly obvious. See if anyone can figure it out.

More sketches at the usual haunts

Hope everyone has a great weekend. I’ll try my best to post some new sketches from the “Con.

Excuses, excuses…

I’ve been remiss in posting because work has been crazy this week – trying to get stuff ready for the Comicon. It will be great hopping on the train tomorrow for San Diego with my son and geeking out for the day. It’s usually a fun sort of sensory overload, and I look forward to getting some good art books and comics. Maybe some sketching will come out of it too.

Summer swimmin’

Last weekend we spent two days in two different pools. The kids loved it. This is where it paid off, dragging those poor kids to the local YMCA in the winter to their weekly swim lessons.

A watched pot never boils…

…a sketched pot, however… This was the first time I’ve noticed that the steam doesn’t come directly out of the spigot, but an inch or so away from it. File that in the “stuff you learn while sketching” dept.

Long July 4th weekend

We had a nice relaxing four-day weekend. We spent one day and one night up in the local mountains. Our friends let us stay with them in their beautiful, multi-level cabin-like summer home. I did some sketching – this view from the dining room table:

Later we went out and had lunch. I sketched this view of a giant totem pole in the parking area while standing on the porch waiting for the kids to make their purchases in the candy shop:

In all, it was some much needed relaxation.

Excellent Photoshop drawing tutorial

Chris Wahl is an illustrator living in Australia who has a wonderful blog. He has some videos on his site that show (in sped-up time) him doing some great drawing right in the computer. He uses the traditional blue pencil (in this case a digital “pencil”) underdrawing and then digitally “inks” in black over it. It’s great to watch him “undo” stuff he’s not happy with, reposition elements, and even flip the entire drawing backwards to get a fresh perspective on it, then flip it back again. It’s like taking a drawing to the mirror that you’ve been working on a while – it’s always a shock to see some glaring errors that you’ve just become used to, but are really apparent when the image is flipped. I’ve actually never thought, before this, to use the “edit>transform>flip horizontal” function in Photoshop to do the same thing.
The video is here to check out, and there are several more on his main page.
